Right in the middle of it all: Georg Fraisl (here with Mikaela Shiffrin) has been traveling for the Kronenzeitung in the ski circus for 28 years.

A zoff has flared up around the Lauberhorn.

Georg Fraisl has been on the ski circuit for 28 years. There is hardly anything that the Austrian did not already experience as a reporter. You might think. The quarrel surrounding the Lauberhorn races, however, also leave him almost speechless. «I’ve really been through a lot. But what is currently happening in Switzerland is unique. I am shocked and really hope that the Lauberhorn does not disappear from the World Cup. »
–
Fraisl is convinced that most fans in Austria also think like him. «I have no glee. Why too? I love this race, it’s wonderful. Lauberhorn and Ski Switzerland simply belong together. » For him it is clear: It should be in everyone’s interest – including tourism – that Beat Feuz and Co. will continue to fly over the crested dog. “Wengen and Kitzbühel are the greatest classics in skiing. They are what Holmenkollen is for cross-country skiers. Or Wimbledon for tennis. Irreplaceable.”
–
«A minus business? I nearly cant believe that”
The ski expert shakes his head all the more violently when asked about the red numbers that the classic in the Bernese Oberland has delivered in recent years. It is strange that Kitzbühel makes a profit of around one million francs in normal years without cancellation, while Wengen fights for survival.
–
«I know the conditions are different. Getting there is much more complicated in Wengen. Still, when I look at the incredible crowds on the opposite slope of the dog’s head, I can hardly believe that this is a minus business. »
–
The TV ratings are also gigantic, according to Fraisl. He jokes: “There must be someone who runs away unnoticed with a large suitcase.” Humor is when you laugh anyway.
–
Traditions: Yes, but …
Nevertheless: Fraisl is worried about the Swiss ski classic. He loves the traditions that are upheld in Wengen.
–
But he also warns: «Whoever says A must also say B. Traditions are wonderful. But it doesn’t bother chamois if there is an advertising sheet on the dog’s head for one week a year. It doesn’t have to go as far as in Kitzbühel, where everything is marketed down to the last detail. But an opening is important. »

Does the Lauberhorn Zoff end on Thursday?
Today the Zoff between Swiss Ski and the Lauberhorn races is to be ended. Since 2016 the Wengener OK has asked the national ski association for more money, the dispute continues. Especially after OC boss Urs Näpflin dragged Swiss Ski 2018 to the international sports court.
The next level of escalation was reached last week when Swiss Ski had Wengen deleted from the provisional World Cup calendar for 2022. Although this application was withdrawn after a first rapprochement, the Zoff has not yet been settled.
On Thursday morning, Näpflin and Swiss Ski President Urs Lehmann met their lawyers in Bern for preliminary talks. From 4 p.m., Minister of Sport Viola Amherd and representatives of the Canton of Bern will draw a line under the affair.
