Almost Losing Their Life Due to COVID-19, This Marathon Fan Struggles to Run 1 Km

In early March, Lat had a fever and chills. During the week his symptoms worsened, he immediately checked himself by going to the emergency room at NYU Langone.

“When I got there, I could barely stand or walk,” said Lat.

She received emergency oxygen but breathing became more difficult in the following days. At the end of the month, doctors sedated him and put him on a ventilator, and he used the device for six days in the intensive care unit.

On April 1, Lat left the hospital, he could barely walk. This is a far cry from her stamina in 2005 and 2007, the years when she raced the New York City Marathon in less than five hours.

Negative from COVID-19, Lat’s physical performance has decreased. In fact, this condition occurs several months after recovering from COVID-19.

“During the first two months, I felt like there was no progress,” he said.

“Shortness of breath persisted, and coughing continuously made my back, chest and shoulders hurt,” said Lat.

Then in June, somehow the cough and shortness of breath he had been experiencing just disappeared. From then on, he started walking for sports including jogging.

“I’m trying to think about getting back into shape,” he said.

Lat remains optimistic to be able to regain his performance before he caught COVID-19. After he was able to conquer the 1.6 km run, he would gradually improve his abilities.

Currently, he does not think he will return to a marathon that can run for tens of kilometers. But if he could do a 5km run, that would be a big thing for him.
