Slightly fewer leavers than four years ago
In the 2017 elections, 71 MPs said goodbye, slightly more than in 2021. So now too much experience is disappearing from the House, something that, among others, President Arib previously regretted. But professor of parliamentary history and parliamentary system Bert van den Braak puts the meaning of this into perspective: today’s leavers include a relatively large number of MPs who have been MPs for four years or less.
And the “problem” is greater in one group than in another. For example, in the largest group, the VVD, 19 of the 32 MPs do not return. And there are relatively many departures from, among others, GroenLinks (8 out of 14), ChristenUnie (4 out of 5) and 50Plus (3 out of 3).
