Almost EUR 1.6 million for horses at the Pride of Poland auction in Janów Podlaski

  • 22 Arabians were put up for the auction, mostly mares from the state studs in Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Białka
  • 10 horses were sold for a total amount of PLN 1,587,000. euro. The horses were auctioned by buyers, incl. from Belgium, Switzerland, Bahrain
  • The success of the auction was discussed, among others, by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski
  • The record amount so far at the Pride of Poland auction fell in 2015. Then the 10-year-old gray mare Pepita, bred at the Janów stud, was sold for EUR 1.4 million

-The auction was successful, especially in terms of organization, that it was possible to carry out all this, which is not so obvious in times of a pandemic. (…) We obtained a very satisfactory result, better than last year, said Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In his opinion, the results of the auction confirm that “the period of very negative critical assessment of Polish horse breeding is happily behind us”. – The auction confirmed that this time of such sadness, the time of convincing some breeders and buyers in the world that horse breeding in Poland is in a bad situation, in a bad situation, in some state of bankruptcy, it must have all passed – added the minister.

“The most determined ones have come”

22 Arabians were put up for the auction, mostly mares from the state studs in Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Białka. One horse was withdrawn from the auction. 11 horses did not find buyers, did not reach the minimum price assumed by the owners and were not sold.

10 horses were sold for a total amount of PLN 1,587,000. euro. For 95 thousand. Lawinia from the Michałów stud was sold for euro. 70 thousand Euro was auctioned for a foal to be born in March next year from Emandoria from Michałów Stud, and 55,000 for the foal to be born in April next year from Enezja from the private stud Falborek Arabians. The horses were auctioned by buyers, incl. from Belgium, Switzerland, Bahrain.

9-year-old gray mare Perfinka, which for 1 million 250 thousand the euro was auctioned by a buyer from Saudi Arabia, last year it won all the championships in the USA. She was not at the auction, the mare is currently on lease in the US, which ends on August 31st.

According to Ardanowski, the success of this mare at the auction shows that studs, in order to participate in the global trade in Arabian horses, must cooperate with breeders in other countries and lease horses more boldly. – It seems that we have to be much more open to lease of horses, because the mare that obtained the highest price was valued very low two years ago, and nothing has changed in her habit, behavior or movements. This lease to an important breeder in the USA, won championships overseas, and the promotion of this horse resulted in her obtaining a sensational, absolutely unexpected amount of PLN 1,250,000. euro. These are records that were recorded a few years ago (at auctions) – said Ardanowski.

The president of the Polish Horse Racing Club – the main organizer of the event – Tomasz Chalimoniuk said that due to restrictions related to the pandemic, incl. in traveling, there were fewer buyers at the auction. – The most determined ones came, that is, those who had already selected horses to buy, knew what they wanted, buy and for how much – he said.

As he added, the facilities introduced at the auction, i.e. transmission on the Internet and the possibility of bidding over the phone, have proved successful. – We had these buyers on the phone of four and it worked very well. (…) Perfinka showed that it is possible to sell a horse that is not available (at the auction), that is, if there are buyers for a specific horse, they do not have to come and watch – said Chalimoniuk.

The next auction is on Monday

On Monday in Janów Podlaski there will be also the Summer Sale of Arabian Horses, which will include 23 horses – 19 mares and four stallions. One more mare, which was not sold during the Sunday Pride of Poland auction, is to be included.

Last year, 14 horses were auctioned at the Pride of Poland auction for a total amount of PLN 1,396 thousand. euro. The highest price – 400 thousand. euro – the five-year-old gray mare Galerida bred in Michałów. Six horses did not reach the minimum price set by the owners at the auction and were not sold.
