Another sign that the pandemic has moved from the center to the west of the country, Manitoba announced a record number of new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday for a second day in a row.
Manitoba public health has identified no less than 72 people with COVID-19 in its territory in the last 24 hours. Its previous record of 42 infected people had been set the day before.
Like Saskatchewan previously, Manitoba has to contend with outbreaks of COVID-19 among Hutterite communities, Protestant sectarian groups living in reclusive communities like the Amish.
The chief hygienist of the province, Dr Brent Roussin, assured Sunday that these communities “cooperate and work with public health to try to limit the spread of the virus”.
A few weeks earlier, Saskatchewan had observed the same phenomenon on its territory. It has since subsided, so much so that the province only announced three new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.
For its part, Quebec fell back below the bar of 100 cases per day, Sunday, after crossing this threshold on Saturday, ending a series of eight days of announcements in the double digits.
La Belle Province has listed 74 contaminations in the last 24 hours. In addition, a death that occurred at an unspecified date added to Quebec’s heavy toll.
Ontario, for its part, remained above the 100-case threshold with 115 more SARS-CoV-2 infections. However, no deaths have been reported in the country’s most populous province.
Ontario went ahead with a new stage in its deconfinement on Sunday by allowing gatherings of up to 50 people in a closed environment, such as reception rooms.
Elsewhere in the country, two cases and one death have been reported in Nova Scotia, while one case has been reported in New Brunswick.
In total, Canada had 267 more infected people than the day before, Sunday, for a total of 124,894 cases since the start of the pandemic. There are now 9,073 Canadians who have lost their lives after contracting the virus, two more than the day before.
Alberta and British Columbia, however, have not updated their data.
