Tánaiste Micheál Martin has announced the successful evacuation of almost 90 Irish citizens and their dependents from Sudan amid recent conflict. International partners and the Irish Army Ranger Wing worked in conjunction to safely extract the Irish citizens from the country. The fighting, which began in April, has its roots in a power struggle between the two main factions of the military regime. Concern’s country director in Sudan, AKM Musha, described the situation as “horrendous” with fighting and food shortages making life unbearable. Concern has since suspended operations in the region, other aid organisations have also been affected. The Irish Government’s teams in Nairobi, Djibouti, and Dublin are continuing to secure further evacuations.
