Almost 500 percent more Tesla approvals in Germany> teslamag.de

With a strong last quarter the US electric car manufacturer Tesla increased its sales last year by a total of about 50 percent. In Germany, it was even able to achieve almost a tenfold increase, as can be seen from the recently published figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) regarding new registrations. Unlike in the rest of the world, the final quarter of 2019 was weak for Tesla in Germany: With a total of 1703 Model 3, Model S and Model X, not even half as many Teslas were newly registered as in the first quarter.

The new Tesla registrations were also in the second and third quarters of 2019 with around 2700 each was even higher than in the last quarter of the year. As usual, there was a drastic increase in December 2019 as the last month of the quarter to 1130 new Teslas after 280 in November. But that was not enough to weak previous months compensate.

Electric cars like Tesla’s are generally much less popular in Germany than in other European countries. Part of the reason for this is better funding conditions, for example in the Netherlands in December 2019 led to almost daily record reports and in Norway the Model 3 is by far the best-selling car did at all. But even in much smaller Switzerland, more Tesla cars were sold in December 2019 than in Germany.

However, Tesla had one in Germany at the end of the year Federal government decision to fight, which should actually serve to give electromobility more momentum: In mid-November it was decided that the purchase premium for electric cars in Germany should increase from 4,000 euros to 6,000 euros. But this regulation is not yet officially in force, so many Tesla prospects may have been waiting for it. A date for this is still unknown.

Overall, according to the KBA, Tesla nevertheless sold 10,711 of its electric cars in 2019 and achieved a market share of 0.3 percent, which corresponds to an increase in new registrations of 462.3 percent compared to the previous year. In 2018, before the introduction of the Model 3, the number of new Tesla registrations in Germany was 1905.
