Allergic diseases in winter, humidity maintenance and skin barrier protection important

It’s easy to get worse in cold and dry winter

-With the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), allergic patients are also experiencing greater grievances.

Allergic rhinitis or asthma is generally sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity and is prone to exacerbation when the temperature is cold and dry like these days.

In particular, respiratory and allergic symptoms such as allergic rhinitis or acute exacerbation of asthma are very similar to the symptoms of Corona 19, so if you have allergies, you are bound to be more concerned about your health.

In children with asthma patients with weak lung function, asthma symptoms may worsen when using masks with high blocking rates such as KF94 or N95 for a long time. For asthma patients in children and adolescents, the use of KF80 or dental mask, which has a relatively low increase in airway resistance, is determined by consulting the attending physician. In addition, you should always carry a portable bentoline (fast-acting bronchodilator) inhaler to use when you have acute asthma symptoms.

Professor Jeon Yoo-hoon of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents at Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital of Hallym University said, “Some of the children with asthma wear masks at school and attend classes while complaining of symptoms such as shortness of breath or headache and visit the hospital.” If you experience stuffy symptoms due to wearing a mask, you should go out to an uninhabited space for a while, take off your mask, and consult with your school teacher so you can breathe.”

At dawn in winter, as the temperature drops, the nose and bronchi can become swollen and narrow, causing symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing.

The skin, which was not a problem in summer, is white and itchy in dry winter. Since 60-70% of our body cells are made of water, problems occur in the stratum corneum of the skin surface in winter when moisture is insufficient.

Atopic dermatitis can worsen because it is more affected by dry weather because there is a malfunction in the stratum corneum.

As a way to control the humidity in a dry house, there is also a method of hanging wet towels, but it is often difficult to maintain proper humidity with this method when heating is done in dry weather in the middle of winter.

For this reason, a humidifier is used in winter, but very careful use of a humidifier is required.

In the water accumulated in the humidifier, bacteria and fungi that live well in humid places are easy to form. If a contaminated humidifier is used, water vapor including bacteria or fungi penetrates into the bronchi through the nose or mouth, which can lead to bacterial pneumonia or irritable pneumonia.

You will remember the incident that caused pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory failure, and death due to the deposition of toxic components in the humidifier disinfectant in the lungs.

In order to use the humidifier safely, it must be cleaned daily, and when the humidifier is not in use, the container must be completely empty and stored in a dry condition.

Professor Jeon Yu-hoon said, “The ultrasonic humidifier has relatively large moisture particles, so water droplets contaminated with dust or bacteria can enter the bronchi, and the vaporization humidifier can contaminate the humidification filter or the humidification disc.” Even if there is, it is important to keep all humidifiers clean.”

It is not good to wipe too thickly when washing your face or bathing. The natural oil component in the stratum corneum of the skin is damaged, making it impossible to function as a skin barrier.

Prof. Jeon Yu-hoon said, “With the spread of Corona 19, the amount of time indoors is increasing. In traditional houses built with soil and wood, humidity control is naturally well done, but modern houses and heating methods have difficulty maintaining adequate humidity. “The proper indoor humidity is 50~60%, and it is difficult to maintain this humidity in winter, so you have to take care to control the humidity by using several methods such as plants that control the humidity and hanging wet towels. Drinking enough fluids is also important to prevent dryness of the skin, nasal mucosa, and bronchial mucosa.”
