Algeria Inaugurates Third Largest Mosque in the World Ahead of Ramadan

Algeria – Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, Algeria inaugurated the third largest mosque in the world and the largest in Africa. The mosque with the name Djamaa El-Djazair is officially the largest mosque after the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Nabawi Mosque in Medina.

The Djamaa El-Djazair Mosque was inaugurated directly by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on the Mediterranean coastline, North Africa. The official opening of this mosque is expected to accommodate many congregations for prayers and events during the month of Ramadan 2024.

Quoted from Al Jazeera, Thursday (29/2/2024), the inauguration event of this mosque was only ceremonial. The reason is, this mosque was opened to international and local tourists about five years ago and was first opened for prayers in October 2020.

The Tallest Tower in the World

The Djamaa El-Djazair Mosque has the tallest minaret in the world with a height of 265 meters. The pillars are decorated with marble and a large mihrab which displays beautiful Algerian decorations.

This mosque was built on land with an area of ​​27.75 hectares or around 277,500 m2 and can accommodate 120 thousand worshipers. To accommodate the congregation, the Algerian Grand Mosque is equipped with a prayer room covering an area of ​​20,000 m2.

With this building area, this mosque has been named the largest mosque in the world after the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Nabawi Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, the walls of the mosque are decorated with Arabic calligraphy for 6 km and are designed using standard anti-earthquake techniques.

Third Largest Mosque Facilities in the World

Reported from Investigate Daily, The Djamaa El-Djazair Mosque consists of 43 floors with 15 of them being museum spaces related to the history of Algeria. Then, there are 10 floors which function as a research center and shopping center.

As for facilities, there is a large courtyard surrounded by gardens, a pool on the ground floor, and a library that can accommodate up to one million books. It doesn’t stop there, there is also a landing area for helicopters and a car park that can accommodate 4 thousand cars.

Apart from that, the 3rd largest mosque in the world cost around USD 900 million or around IDR 14.2 T to build and was built by a company from China. (1 USD is equivalent to IDR 15,723)
