The sudden death of Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most formidable rival, has left his family and political team in a state of grief and frustration. Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, has also been denied access to her son’s body. Despite traveling to the prison where he died and the local morgue, she was not allowed to see him. Even after his death, Russian authorities continue to repress support for Navalny.

In August 2020, he was poisoned with a chemical nerve agent, which he later proved was carried out by agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service.

Thousands of Russians have signed petitions demanding the return of Navalny’s body to his family and access to surveillance footage from the prison. Independent Russian media outlet Mediazona published a video showing a convoy, possibly carrying Navalny’s body, traveling from the prison colony to Salekhard.
