Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will work with Joe Biden’s campaign on policies against climate change | International

The campaign of Joe Biden, de facto Democratic Party candidate for the presidential elections in November, announced on Wednesday a star signing of high symbolic burden. Popular congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who got her start in politics working for Bernie Sanders, whom she supported in these primaries until her retirement in April, has joined Biden’s campaign to co-chair a panel on climate change. The congresswoman from New York has two qualities that constitute two of the main shortcomings of the candidate: youth and pull between the leftist and insurgent wing of the party. That is why the signing, coordinated with Sanders himself, is framed in a party union and wound closure strategy facing the elections.

When leftist Sanders pulled out of the race, making Biden the de facto candidate until the Democratic convention scheduled for August, supported the former vice president and announced that it would work with him to create a series of panels or working groups to define the policies that would make up the party’s program in economic, education, justice, immigration, health and climate change. The latter will be chaired by Ocasio-Cortez along with former Secretary of State John Kerry, Biden’s ally and who helped shape the Paris Agreement during the Barack Obama Administration.

“We have set up joint committees to see how we handle everything from the coronavirus to education, criminal justice, climate change, and so on. We have, you know, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez. It’s on one of the panels, “Biden said Tuesday on a Las Vegas television. On Wednesday morning, the candidate’s campaign published the list of panels created jointly with Sanders, with the names of the members, and that of the congresswoman was among them.

Since obtaining his seat in the House of Representatives in the 2018 legislatures, Ocasio-Cortez has made the fight against the climate crisis one of his flags. She is one of the main promoters in the Green New Deal Congress, an ambitious plan to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, with a colossal public intervention whose mere mention causes rashes among certain Republican legislators. The popularity of the initiative among Democratic voters led Biden to join it during the primaries.

“After consulting with grassroots activists and climate allies, I accept Bernie Sanders’ nomination to co-chair the climate change task force along with Secretary of State John Kerry. Our planet is in danger, and wherever decisions are made, people must have a voice, ”Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, after Biden and Sanders announced the members who will participate in the six panels created. To date, Ocasio-Cortez has not formally endorsed Biden, although he has said he will vote for him.
