Alaska cruise season ends after Canadian landfall ban

Canada announced, through his Ministry of Transport, the extension of its prohibition of calls for more than 100 people in the country’s ports until February 28, 2022, affecting the travel season to Alaska.

Authorities made it clear that cruises in Canadian waters pose a risk to healthcare systems.

However, they clarified that if the scenario “improves enough to allow the resumption of these activities, the Minister of Transport has the ability to rescind the provisional orders.”

The Minister Omar Alghabra stated that “as Canadians continue to do their part to reduce the spread of Covid-19, our government continues to work hard to ensure that Canada’s transportation system remains safe.”

“Temporary bans on cruises and pleasure boats are essential to continue to protect the most vulnerable among our communities and avoid overwhelming our health care systems. This is the correct and responsible thing ”, he specified.

This decision affects the cruises of companies such as Princess Cruises, Holland America, Disney Cruise Line y Royal Caribbean, which by provision of the Jones Act, cannot reach Alaska without first stopping in Canada.

The Jones Act states that foreign-flagged ships cannot embark and disembark passengers at two different ports in the United States without stopping at a foreign port in between.

This is why Alaska bound ships departing from Seattle can typically spend a day in Vancouver or Victoria to comply with the rule.
