Ajax confirms temporary return of Brian Brobbey | Football

sport">Brobbey moved from Ajax to Leipzig on a free transfer last summer. The German club already announced the switch in March. Previous attempts by Ajax to have him re-signed in Amsterdam had come to nothing.

sport">Brobbey has not had much playing time at Leipzig so far. He has appeared in nine league games this season, having only been a starter once. Brobbey has yet to score in the Bundesliga. In Ajax’s main squad, the counter stands at six goals after nineteen matches.

sport">“Brian knows the club and knows what is asked of him here,” says Marc Overmars, director of football affairs at Ajax. “It was important for us that there was an extra attacker who would be immediately deployable and that is him. We are still playing on three fronts and we will need every player badly.”

sport">Ajax coach Erik ten Hag praised Brobbey several times this year, who spent eleven years in training at the Amsterdam club. “95 percent of the players who leave at a young age fail,” Ten Hag said in March, just before the transfer to Leipzig was announced. “In my opinion, Ajax is the perfect club for Brobbey to develop further.”

sport">At the beginning of this month, Ten Hag acknowledged that he still has regular contact with Brobbey. “If he had stayed, he would have played more recently. That had been gold for his development. He could compete with Sébastien Haller. With his goals, purposefulness, speed and charisma. He knows our club and fits well in our dressing room.”

sport">Brobbey’s return to Ajax in the Eredivisie will probably not be long in coming. Haller is not available for the time being, because he participates with Ivory Coast in the African Cup tournament in Cameroon. Ajax will resume the season on January 16 with an away match against FC Utrecht. A week later, leader PSV is the opponent in Eindhoven.
