Airbus Secures Record 500-Plane Deal with India’s IndiGo at Paris Airshow

Airbus has secured a record-breaking deal with Indian airline IndiGo for the purchase of 500 planes, making it the largest-ever aircraft deal in terms of the number of aircraft. The announcement was made on the first day of the Paris Airshow, where the industry’s supply chain challenges and strong demand for jets and missiles were in focus.

The multibillion-dollar deal confirms a previous Reuters report and surpasses Air India’s provisional purchase of 470 Airbus and Boeing jets earlier this year. The Paris Airshow, the world’s largest air show, is being held at Le Bourget for the first time in four years after the cancellation of the 2021 edition due to the pandemic.

French President Emmanuel Macron attended the event and witnessed a flying demonstration that included Airbus’s latest jet development, the A321XLR, as well as the French Rafale fighter. The show also highlighted the growing demand for capacity in the aviation industry to meet the goals of net zero emissions by 2050.

However, planemakers are facing challenges in meeting this demand due to rising costs, parts shortages, and a shortage of skilled labor caused by the pandemic. Industry executives estimate that there are up to 2,000 jet orders up for grabs worldwide, as airlines try to recover from the sharp decline in activity during the COVID crisis.

IndiGo’s deal underscores the increasing importance of India as the world’s fastest-growing aviation market with the largest population. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers stated that this is just the beginning and there will be more orders in the future, given the growth of India’s aviation market.

In addition to the deal with IndiGo, Airbus also confirmed an order from Saudi budget airline flynas for 30 A320neo-family narrowbody aircraft. The air show also had a focus on defense, with Belgium applying to join as an observer in the potential successor to the Rafale and multinational Eurofighter, the Franco-German-Spanish FCAS fighter project. France’s Thales also announced a contract from Indonesia for 13 long-range air surveillance radars.

Looking ahead to the rest of the show, Airbus is expected to confirm that Qantas is exercising options for nine more A220s, and there is a potential large order for narrow-body jets from Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus. The Mexican carrier has long been a battleground between Boeing and Airbus.

The Paris Airshow is taking place against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine, with no Russian presence at the event. However, Ukrainian officials and aerospace firms were expected to be present.
