The current border controls put tourism on unsafe feet. It is currently not possible to estimate which borders will be opened and when. The confirmed European Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) on Tuesday evening in the ORF “Report”, after Chancellor Kurz announced on Tuesday a “gradual” border opening for vacationers. But she promised – and “even made possible air travel possible – to work on a kind of summer tourism.”
Air traffic is currently not possible, Edtstadler clarified. With a view to falling corona cases in Austria, however, she said: “If there are countries here that also have a similarly positive development, then that is also conceivable.”
Infections, health system, tests
The minister said that the EU Commission had defined three criteria according to which the situation had to be constantly reassessed. It is about the infection numbers, the functionality of the health system and the tests. Such criteria are needed for travel, among other things, emphasized Edtstadler and said: “Ultimately, we can only overcome this crisis together.”
Edtstadler supports Finance Minister Gernot Blümel’s call on the EU to suspend the “aid regime” during the crisis. The EU must provide help quickly. “We cannot afford to wait for weeks to get a permit,” said the Chancellor’s Minister. Austria was quite ready to show solidarity in the crisis and pay a little more money – but that had to be paid back.
