It is planned to use the couches on the long-haul route between Auckland and New York.

The flight between Auckland and New York takes 18 hours. It is one of the longest scheduled flights in the world. For comparison: the direct connection from Zurich to New York only takes half as long.

Such routes are a hell of a trip for some travelers. They can barely stretch their legs and find no sleep. Air New Zealand is therefore the first airline in the world to consider installing beds in the economy class.
–
The plan: Similar to the youth hostel, three beds are installed one above the other. Six of them stack up in a narrow space. They are supposed to give stressed passengers a moment of rest, but will probably have to be booked additionally.

Flatbed as a privilege of the majority
The exact details are still unclear. There is still no plane with a bed in the wood class. The airline will decide in the middle of the year whether the plan will be implemented. Air New Zealand worked on the concept for three years.
Up to now, a bed on a plane has been a privilege for passengers in First Class, and sometimes also in Business Class. Golf airlines are famous, some of them vying for wealthy clientele with luxurious furnishings.

Cheap bed to the US
Etihad Airways recently introduced a concept with a butler and a four-poster bed. The flight ticket becomes an entry into a twelve square meter luxury suite. Three parts. With living room, bedroom and bathroom.
–
But the whole thing has its price. A one-way ticket costs several thousand francs. The Air New Zealand ticket with bed, on the other hand, could already be booked for a few hundred francs.

For comparison: Depending on the date, a 12-hour non-stop flight from Auckland to the US west coast is available for well under CHF 1,000. (ISE)
