Agrar – Würzburg – Weinbauverband expects harvest losses due to “Eisheiligen” – economy

Würzburg (dpa / lby) – The night frost in the course of the “Eisheiligen” has caused considerable damage in Franconia, according to the wine-growing association. “We are just collecting data to see how the whole situation will work,” said the managing director of the Franconian Wine Association, Hermann Schmitt, of the “Main-Post” (Wednesday). Accordingly, he assumes a loss of 25 to 30 percent in the vineyards. “The whole Mainschleife was hit hard,” said Schmitt. In the Main Valley, dense fog also formed, which protected the vines on the steep slopes from frost.

Because of the warm temperatures in the past few weeks, many shoots were already well developed, said Schmitt. “Now it depends on how big the damage is. But many shoots will not recover from the frost.” Frost protection, for example by gel candles in the vineyard, is not the norm and too expensive for many companies. “We now hope that the frost won’t come again.”
