“It really makes you sweat,” was the surprising observation of a spectator at the after-work walking football tournament in the Seevetal sports center, the first “walking football tournament” in the Harburg district. In addition to two teams from the host TuS Fleestedt, a team from Moorburger TSV and Buchholzer FC also took part. The game was played parallel on two pitches, each with a return leg for twelve minutes, so that each team played a total of four games. “Exactly right for the format as an after-work tournament, after all, some of the players have to go to work tomorrow,” says Jean Künzel, who looks after the group at TuS Fleestedt. “Our people are so excited that we could put a third team on the field, but then it will just be too late.”

The games were led by a team of referees from neighboring Schleswig-Holstein, who had already been specially trained for this sport. Although some rules such as offside are no longer applicable in walking football, it is not exactly easy to recognize when players may lose contact with the ground, which is considered a violation in the rules. This requires a trained eye.

It wasn’t just the spectators who were surprised at how much speed there was on the playing fields. “There’s a difference whether you play in training or whether you play a tournament in a jersey,” says Künzel. The Buchholzer FC team finished the tournament in first place with twelve out of 18 points, followed by Fleestedt II with ten points as well as Fleestedt I and the Moorburger TSV team. But for the walking footballers that’s not quite as important as the games themselves. And of course the debriefing in the TuS clubhouse with fries and cold drinks, in which a large proportion of the 42 players took part.

If you want to try out walking football yourself, you can do so every Monday from 7.30 p.m TuS Fleestedt in the Seevetal sports center, Tuesdays from 6 p.m Moorburger TSV and also on Tuesdays from 7.30 p.m Buchholzer FC.
