After the storm: Insurance companies receive hundreds of damage reports

As it is here, it currently looks in many Bergkamen cellars after the flood. If you now report your damage to the insurance company, you will hopefully have elementary insurance. Only then is it protected against flood damage.

At the Bergkamen insurance offices, the day after the torrential rain, the telephones no longer stood still because countless damage reports were received – especially from overfilled cellars.

Bergkamen – “I have never experienced anything like this”, describes Florian Gach, employee of the LVM agency Herber & Schedalke, on behalf of the Bergkamen insurance offices. His office on Jahnstrasse in Oberaden is located in Bergkamen, the district most affected by the floods. “At times the water ran through under the door, but we were able to stop that.”

The agency has now received an estimated 100 to 200 damage reports. “That is unprecedented, especially in this area. We’re not exactly predestined for natural hazards in the Unna district. ”At least in the past. “

The heavy rainfalls are increasing

The past three to four years have shown that heavy rainfall is increasing. The fact that we are so big now, however, is new, ”says Florian Gach. The most recent extreme weather events have also ensured that many customers opt for elementary insurance. “That affects an estimated 80 to 90 percent of our customers. Because only those who have taken out additional insurance against natural hazards are covered against damage such as heavy rain, floods or storms, ”emphasizes Gach.

In order to cover all damage, both home and home insurance must include protection against natural hazards. Then both the inventory and the building fabric (in the case of property) are insured. Otherwise there will be no money and those affected will be left with the damage.
