After the internal combustion engines, the hydrogen is supposed to end at Hyundai

Just after the world learned of the alleged end of the development of internal combustion engines at Hyundai, we have another report in a similar vein. However, it is a bit more surprising – it is an interruption in the development of hydrogen propulsion systems indefinitely. Again alleged – like the end of internal combustion engines, the carmaker has not yet confirmed a break for hydrogen.

The report is provided by the Korean news website Chosun Iibo and states that the development of the third generation of the propulsion system using hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity has been postponed.

It’s surprisingly much more than the end of internal combustion engines. Many other carmakers have decided to do so, but hydrogen – at least the “green” one, ie produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources – many people cite as solutions for clean mobility better than battery electric cars.

Hyundai has been working on hydrogen fuel cells for many years. His first car with this drive was the Santa Fe, introduced in the fall of 2000, followed by the Tucson, ix35 and finally the current nexo.

In addition, a few months ago, the carmaker announced an ambitious plan to popularize hydrogen as a strong and sustainable energy source for the automotive industry. It introduced the Vision FK concept, which was powered by a 680k hydrogen system. The news of the end of these efforts – at least provisionally, Chosun Iibo talks about the interruption indefinitely – is at least surprising.

This is allegedly due to the carmaker’s inability to achieve its goals in reducing the cost of producing such cars, as well as limited sales due to insufficient hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
