After recent death of 10-year-old girl in America: how often and where does the plague still occur?

Biology professor, Herwig Leirs, (UAntwerp) confirms that the girl from La Plata has died of the plague. “On average, there are 7 cases of bubonic plague in people in the United States and 1 person dies every year,” he says. “Plague occurs in the western US, especially in the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and sometimes in California. La Plata in Colorado is also a hotspot for plague infections.”
