Michel van den Heuvel will become national coach of the hockey players of Belgium after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the Royal Belgian Hockey Association (KBHB) announced on Tuesday.
55-year-old Van den Heuvel, who is in his fourth season as head coach of the hockey players of Bloemendaal, was already an assistant national coach of the Belgian team. After the Games, he will take over the duties of New Zealander Shane McLeod, whose contract actually expired after this summer.
Due to the postponement of the Olympic Games, the KBHB decided after consultation with Van den Heuvel and McLeod to implement the changes to the staff a year later. McLeod leaves after the Games of 2021, after which Van den Heuvel becomes national coach.
Van den Heuvel goes on a hunt with Belgium for medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His new contract expires after that tournament.
Previously, Van den Heuvel was already national coach of the Oranjemannen with whom he finished third at the World Cup in 2010. Last season he became national champion with Bloemendaal.
Before the league was halted, Van den Heuvel and Bloemendaal led the league in the big league. It is unclear whether and when the competition can be played.
