After 84 COVID-19 Free Days, Thailand Finds 1 New Case

VIVA – Thailand is one of the countries in Southeast Asia which for the last few months is free from local infections COVID-19. In total, it has been 84 days that the White Elephant Country is free from corona virus infection.

However, the Director General of Thailand’s Department of Disease Control, Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, said this did not guarantee that Thailand was free from the virus. It is true, the evidence was yesterday that a new case was reported.

According to him, the period without local infection has nothing to do with the risk of a second spread, which may come from the easing of business closures and the arrival of foreigners including migrant workers.

He cited other countries such as Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and New Zealand, showing the risk still exists because these countries are facing the spread of a second wave of COVID-19 after a long period of time they have not recorded local infections.

Dr Suwannachai said officials concerned do not intend to maintain a period of zero local infections. However it wants to detect patients quickly, treat them efficiently and limit the rate of spread.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Public Health will keep the spread at a level that allows the continuity of the national economy.

Meanwhile, The National Thailand reported that the government’s COVID-19 Situation Administration Center reported one new case over a 24 hour period on Monday, 17 August 2020, exactly 84 days without domestic cases since May 2020.

The positive case was a 24-year-old male student without symptoms who came from Indonesia and tested positive for COVID-19. (ren)
