The goal is to make a kind of umbrella that blocks out the light. While it’s not clear why African storks use this particular technique, scientists hypothesize that this technique has several advantages.

One of them is reducing the glare that can attract fish into the trap. One acceptable theory is that small fish looking for a place to hide from predators are attracted to the shade created by the wings of the crane.

As reported by Oddity Central, Thursday (20/5/2021), the shade gives bird better view of its victim, he can easily grab it from the water with its long beak.

“It’s all part of a hunting tactic that takes a lot of time to find smaller prey just beneath the surface,” Bill Shields, a professor emeritus at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, told Audubon.

Interestingly, the animal has bright yellow feet, which may have been used to distract and distract its target. This technique proved to be efficient, so the birds evolved to rely on this method exclusively.

“It could also be argued that the lure of shadows and bright legs are now working together to draw fish into the feeding range,” says Evans.
