Afghan minister becomes bicycle courier in Germany (video)

The former politician already attends German lessons before the start of his evening shift

Syed Sadaat served as communications minister in the Afghan government before moving to Germany last September, hoping for a better future. He is now a supplier in the eastern city of Leipzig, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

According to him, some people in his homeland have criticized his choice to take such a job after his two-year service in the government, which he left in 2018. But for him, his job is a job.

I don’t have to feel guilty“said Sadaat, 49, wearing an orange uniform. As he recounted this, he was standing next to his bicycle, which was delivering supplies.

“I hope that other politicians will follow the same path to work with the people, instead of just hiding,” he added.

His story gained particular popularity amid the chaos in Afghanistan after the Taliban took power. People from his family and friends now also want to leave the country, hoping to join thousands of others on evacuation flights or find another way to escape.

Now that the withdrawal of US forces is on the horizon, according to the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the number of Afghans seeking asylum has increased by more than 130% since the beginning of the year.

But despite his biography, Sadaat is struggling to find work in Germanyto match his experience. He hopes to start working in a field for which he has degrees, such as information technology and telecommunications. But without knowledge of German, his chances are slim.

“Language is the most important part,” admits Sadaat, who also has British citizenship.

Every day he attends German lessons for four hours at a language school before the start of his 6-hour evening shift of a food supplier for the company “Liferando” since the beginning of this summer.

“The first few days were exciting but difficult,” he said, adding that it was a big challenge for him to learn to ride a bike in city traffic.

“The more you go out and meet people, the more you learn,” he added.
