AfDB approves nearly $250 million in loans to Rwanda to improve access to water and sanitation – FAAPA FR

Abidjan, 10/12/2023 (MAP) – The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group approved, recently in Abidjan, nearly $250 million in loans to Rwanda to improve access to the population to water and sanitation services.

The Transformative and Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program (Phase I) will benefit from a loan of $199.5 million from the Bank, and another loan of $50 million from Africa Growing Together Fund (AGTF), a co-financing fund established by the ADB and the People’s Bank of China.

The Rwandan government will provide, for its part, $24.7 million to finance the program, indicates an AfDB press release, specifying that the implementation of the project is planned over five years, from January 2024 to December 2029.

The program aims to improve the population’s access to water supply and sanitation services, and to strengthen the management of water resources and the operational performance of water supply and sanitation service providers in the targeted areas.

It will strengthen the resilience of the Rwandan population in the face of climate change and variability, said the same source.

Phase 1 of the program focuses on the rehabilitation of the Nzove wastewater treatment plant infrastructure and the construction of the Nyaruguru-Huye-Gisagara, Mwange, Muhazi, Mugesera and Kivu Belt water supply networks.

The program will also help reduce the wastewater infrastructure gap, providing households with more opportunities to access improved sanitation services.

Several programs in the water sector in Rwanda benefit from the support of the AfDB, including the Sustainable and Resilient Water Supply and Sanitation Program, the Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program, the Development program for the Muvumba multipurpose dam, and the Kigali water supply project, the country’s capital.

Key expected outcomes include increased raw water storage and treatment capacities, strengthened sanitation services, and sustainable raw water resources for water supply systems.
