Admiral Flávio Rocha will leave the Communication Secretariat of the Presidency

BRASÍLIA – Admiral Flávio Rocha will leave the command of the Special Secretariat of Communication, which has been acting temporarily for a month. The information was confirmed to GLOBO by two sources from the Planalto Palace. One of the president’s main assistants, he will follow just ahead of the Special Secretariat for Strategic Affairs (SAE). There is still no indication of a replacement.

Second columnist Lauro Jardim, the change at Secom is attributed to councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ), who has complained about the admiral at the post, claiming that the government is under attack and has failed to defend himself.

This Wednesday, Rocha accompanied President Jair Bolsonaro on a visit to the UK embassy, alongside some ministers. Then, he participated in an online seminar promoted by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), but left the event before the end, minutes before his departure from the government was announced.

Flávio Rocha took over Secom, replacing ex-secretary Fabio Wajngarten, who left office after accumulating friction in the government. Rocha’s trip to Secom was tailored during the trip with the Minister of Communications, Fábio Faria, on a visit to Sweden, Finland, South Korea, Japan and China to visit 5G technology companies in February. The admiral, who is active in the military, has already headed the Navy Communication.

The military arrived in Planalto in early 2020 to take over the SAE and became one of Bolsonaro’s main auxiliaries. In a short time, Rocha started to be appointed as a “conflict administrator” in the government and has also acted as a kind of public relations, organizing meetings of the president with parliamentarians and members of other powers. The rapid rise, however, has sparked jealousy in the government.
