Leeuwarden yesterday regained a centuries-old royal flag that had not been seen since 1950. The gigantic flag turned out to be in an attic in Veldhoven, writes Omrop Fryslân.

The flag was flown in the Frisian capital from 1814 onwards during royal visits, but was forgotten after more than 130 years of loyal service. Local history expert Ad Fahner read about the flag in a 1950 article in the Leeuwarder Courant and decided to go looking.

He started his search at the Fries Museum, but they didn’t have him there either. Ultimately, together with the Historical Center Leeuwarden, he discovered that the flag had been inherited by a woman in Veldhoven.

The woman still had the 5 by 2 meter flag in the attic and wanted to return it to the city with love. Mayor Sybrand Buma received the flag: “It is a one-off event that you receive something like this. Completely unique,” he said to the Leeuwarder Courant.

‘Buy a new one’

After all these years, the flag is quite brittle and will therefore no longer be used in the future when members of the Royal Family visit. “We won’t do that. Then we will buy a new flag and start again,” Fahner told Omrop Fryslân.

It is not yet known whether the flag can be exhibited, for example in the Historical Center Leeuwarden. The flag will be kept in the municipality’s storage for the time being.
