In an interview with The Sunday actor Peter De Graef told candidly about his spirituality and his ability to remain optimistic. “I have had to change,” he says. “After years ago I was structurally depressed and addicted to drugs.”

At the beginning of 2020, Peter De Graef faced a sold-out series of screenings of Help!, his theater performance, when the coronavirus struck. In an interview with The Sunday the gifted actor says he remains hopeful that it will come soon. “I try to take things as they come and I’m getting better at it,” says De Graef. “The same goes for setbacks. You have to learn to deal with that, even if it costs you a few years of your life. But then there is so much beauty that I would not want to have missed that setback.”

He gets that courage from Buddhism and the spirituality of which he has been a follower for several years. “I have to,” said De Graef. “Years ago I was structurally depressed and addicted to drugs. It was with the knife at the throat that I had to change. The only other option was death. I have found my happiness in Buddhism and spirituality. Because therein lies a way to generate lasting happiness. So through meditation.”

He says it is not difficult to talk about it. “I’m not ashamed about it, not about my addiction, not about my father with polio and borderline. Of course I was shaped by that and I am who I am thanks to those setbacks. So thank you, misfortunes.”
