Actor Buddy Duress, Known for Roles in Safdie Brothers Films, Dies at 38

The world of cinema mourns the loss of actor Buddy Duress, who tragically passed away last November at the age of 38. Known for his roles in films by the Safdie Brothers, including the critically acclaimed “Good Time” alongside Robert Pattinson, Duress left an indelible mark on the industry. His brother, Christopher Stathis, recently revealed that Duress died from cardiac arrest caused by a lethal combination of drugs.

The news of Duress’ untimely death was first shared on social media by director Jay Karales, who had the privilege of working with the talented actor in his upcoming film, “Mass State Lottery.” Karales, also known as LowRes Wünderbred, expressed his deep admiration for Duress, describing him as an “absolute treasure” and one of the most entertaining individuals he had ever met. He praised Duress’ authenticity and charisma, which brought a unique quality to his performances on screen. Karales considered it a dream come true to have directed Duress and cherished their friendship.

Born in Queens, New York, in May 1985, Duress made his acting debut in Josh and Benny Safdie’s 2014 film, “Heaven Knows What,” starring Caleb Landry Jones and Arielle Holmes. It was during this production that the Safdie Brothers first crossed paths with Duress. However, their collaboration was put on hold when Duress was re-arrested for missing a scheduled in-patient program appointment. Despite his absence, “Heaven Knows What” premiered at the New York Film Festival.

Three years later, Duress reunited with the Safdie Brothers for their crime drama “Good Time,” where he portrayed the drug-dealing partner-in-crime to Robert Pattinson’s character. The film showcased Duress’ exceptional talent and further solidified his status as a rising star in the industry.

Throughout his career, Duress amassed an impressive filmography, including notable credits in films such as “Person to Person” (2017), “The Great Darkened Days” (2018), “Beware of Dog” (2020), and “Funny Pages” (2022). However, his personal struggles often overshadowed his professional achievements. In a 2019 article published by the New York Post, titled “Buddy Duress should be a huge star, but he can’t stay out of Rikers,” it was reported that the actor had been arrested multiple times that year. Charges ranged from grand larceny and menacing to criminal possession of brass knuckles and drugs. Duress even faced allegations of threatening to burn down his mother’s home in Queens, leading her to seek an order of protection against him.

Reflecting on his troubled past, Duress acknowledged the difficulties he posed to those around him. In an interview with the New York Post from Rikers Island, he admitted, “I’m not easy to live with.” Despite these challenges, Duress’s talent and passion for acting shone through, captivating audiences with his performances.

Duress is survived by his brother Christopher and his mother Jo-Anne. His legacy as an actor will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us of the power of authenticity and the importance of cherishing those who leave an indelible mark on our lives. Buddy Duress will forever be remembered as a true talent lost too soon.
