Andrey Martynov in the movie “The Dawns Here Are Quiet”
At the end of May, the media reported that the actor Andrei Martynov, who played the foreman Fedot Vaskov in the film “The Dawns Here Are Quiet,” was taken to the hospital. Doctors saved the 77-year-old artist from severe poisoning. Five years ago Andrei Leonidovich had already spent many days in a hospital bed. Even then there was talk that Martynov was very lonely.
“I started reading, got carried away and at some point burst into tears”
For the role of foreman Vaskov, the unknown Andrei Martynov, director Stanislav Rostotsky took, as they say, reluctantly. For Andrei, this was the first film role. Rostotsky saw Vyacheslav Tikhonov in the image of Fedot. But he was already engaged in his film “Seventeen Moments of Spring” by Tatyana Lioznova.
Vaskov was supposed to look in the frame as a kind of adult uncle who is forced to command the girls. A native of the city of Ivanovo, Martynov, at the time of the screen test, was not even 30 years old. He graduated from GITIS, spent three years in the army, served in the Moscow Youth Theater.
Martynov said: “Stanislav Iosifovich was silent for a while and reluctantly agreed: “Well, read the script, I’ll listen.” I took the manuscript, opened it at random, began to read, got carried away and at some point burst into tears. It hit so hard! I raise my eyes, and Rostotsky’s tears are also shining. Before that, he had never been to a film studio, had no idea how to behave in front of the camera. In the end, I was approved.”
Martynov acted in films until 2010 – until his 65. In total, he played more than 50 roles, including in such films as “Eternal Call”, “White Bim Black Ear”, “Here is Your Front.”
He left the theater in the 1980s. He worked a lot as an actor in film dubbing. The voice of Andrei Leonidovich, for example, was spoken at our box office by Federico in The Wild Rose, Matsui in the film Ocean’s Twelve, Oskar Schindler in the film Schindler’s List.
And they tried to invite Martynov to events more often, including jury members at festivals. Those who were close to the artist knew: Andrei Leonidovich cannot boast that a loving family is looking forward to him at home.
“No, I’m not Russian, my mother is German”
Martynov’s only wife is a German citizen. The Dawns Here Are Quiet was released in 1972. In the same year, during the Berlin Film Festival, Andrei met Francisca Thun. The resulting romance ended in marriage. The son Alexander was born.
Francis tried to live in her beloved’s homeland, but this did not last long. Andrei Leonidovich himself once admitted:
“The son was born in Germany and has been a citizen of Germany all his life. When he was six years old, my wife and I decided that he should be educated there. Franziska told me that he suffered a lot, because the German boys teased him as “Russian” because of his surname. And he said: “No, I’m not Russian, my mother is German!”
It is known that Alexander is equally fluent in Russian and German. Martynov has three grandchildren. It became more and more difficult for him to maintain relations with his family at a distance with each passing year. And life in a foreign land seemed simply unthinkable to the actor.
Andrei Leonidovich never met a woman who could replace Francis for him. The marriage between Martynov and Tun essentially ceased to exist a long time ago, but was officially annulled only in 2017. The artist’s ex-wife, his son and grandchildren are all abroad, which means that you can’t count on frequent communication with them.
The physician raised the alarm
Back in 2018, our newspaper reported that Andrei Leonidovich slipped on the street and broke his arm in several places. That he was in the hospital for quite a long time, also because at home he did not have to rely on constant care.
And in May of this year, it became known about Martynov’s hospitalization due to poisoning. Neighbor, friend and colleague of the actor Lyudmila Zaitseva in conversations with reporters today shares:
“I don’t know all the details, but I realized that at first the attending physician, who patronizes Andryusha, sounded the alarm, called someone, asked who had the keys to his apartment. I know that Andryusha has problems with his eyes. He can’t see well and can’t walk well.”
When asked if the son and grandchildren of the elderly artist knew what had happened to him, Zaitseva suddenly stated: “I have no idea, alas, there are no connections with them. But Martynov has people who will take care of him, including his friends.”
