Action Comics No. 1 Sells for $6 Million, Becoming the World’s Most Expensive Comic Book at Auction

The previous auction record was held by Amazing Fantasy No. 15, which introduced Spider-Man to the world. The copy graded CGC Near Mint+ 9.6 sold for $3.6 million at Heritage Auctions in September 2021.

Heritage Auction referred to Action Comics No. 1 as the most important comic ever published due to its groundbreaking introduction of Superman.

Superman’s portrayal in the comic was remarkably similar to the current-day superhero, addressing issues such as unjust imprisonment, spousal abuse, disarmament, and drunken driving, as highlighted by author Les Daniels in Superman: The Complete History.

In a truly momentous auction, the sale of Action Comics No. 1 marked a historic milestone as it surpassed all expectations. Heritage Auctions Vice President, Barry Sandoval, expressed his delight at the enthusiastic response from collectors, especially towards Superman’s debut and other significant items included in the event. These treasured items included the letter from Superman’s co-creator, Jerry Siegel, outlining the alternative concept of Superman, and various milestone moments contributed by legendary comic creators.

Throughout the four-day rare comic book auction organized by Heritage Auctions, records were set, and history was made. This extraordinary event, which concluded on Sunday, captivated the attention of collectors and comic enthusiasts from around the world.
