Act Now: SSD Prices Set to Skyrocket in Coming Months

If you’re thinking about upgrading to an SSD, it’s worth doing it now, as SSD prices will skyrocket in the coming months. Fortunately, the largest price increases are expected in the corporate segment, but the increase will also affect the gaming SSD sector.

Prices for the best SSD models for gaming have been rising for some time, and with high inflation expected in the first quarter, this will directly affect the increased cost of producing the 3D NAND wafer that contains the flash memory used in SSDs. However, SSD price increases in the second quarter of this year are expected to outpace manufacturing costs.

According to a report from technology market research firm TrendForce, the price of the average “client SSD” (M.2 and SATA SSDs from manufacturers such as Samsung and Western Digital) is expected to rise 10-15% in the second quarter (April to June). , while wafer costs are projected to increase by only 5-10%. On the other hand, this price increase is still much less than the predicted 20-25% increase that will affect enterprise SSDs.

In the report, TrendForce points out that most SSD vendors are pursuing “conservative manufacturing strategies,” citing Kioxia and Western Digital as exceptions that have increased their production capacity.

The report also said that some PC OEMs are reducing their orders for Q2 2024, and that demand for NAND flash memory wafer is declining as SSD manufacturers do not need to stockpile inventory. The report points to subdued demand in the retail market as the reason why SSD price increases are lower for consumer drives than for enterprise drives.

So, if possible, it is better to upgrade as soon as possible so as not to overpay.
