“The world slows down to be able to pass over these bumps, that’s what makes cars pile up so much,” explained the prefect of the MRC de l’Île, Harold Noël, in an interview with The newspaper. Once on the island, at the very least, traffic becomes fluid again.
The elected officials of the island had asked that the repairs be carried out this spring rather than in the middle of summer, “but that was not possible”, regrets Mr. Noël.
According to the current schedule, the work started two weeks ago and which mainly takes place at night should be completed by the beginning of September.
“This work will ensure that the bridge remains safe until the entry into service of a new bridge between Quebec and Île d’Orléans,” said Minister of Transport spokesperson Nicolas Vigneault, stressing that measures have been taken to reduce waiting times.
Construction of the new bridge is still scheduled for 2022, with delivery expected in 2027, after which the current bridge will be demolished.
“We know that Mr. Legault will re-table a bill to speed up the decision-making process, we hope that he will succeed in getting it adopted so that we can win even a few months,” said Mr. Noël. .
Increase in attendance
Despite the current slowdowns, many Quebeckers are visiting the island this summer.
“Currently, we have 50% more attendance than last year”, reported the prefect of the MRC of Île-d’Orléans.
“As much in the fruit and vegetable kiosks, at pick-your-own, at the various artisans, and even at the Sainte-Pétronille golf club, we are delighted with the influx of people,” said Mr. Noël.
