Acamus, Spanish Academy of Music, Launches with Big Plans for National Impact

Con more than 500 members already among its ranks and after two years of work in the shadowshas celebrated its “starting gun” the Spanish Academy of Music (Acamus), which from this year will begin to grant some great prizes and will also create a great national museum.

Today is a big day for musicfor artists, authors, music producers, managers, promoters and all of us who in some way are part of the sector and the art of music. It has taken many years for everyone to come together and agree to build a common house“said the conductor Luis Cobos, president of this non-profit association, at a large event held in Madrid.

With the president of Sgae, Antonio Onetti, and with Antonio Guisasola, president of Promusicae, as secretary and treasurer respectively, this “initial board of directors” is completed with representatives from all sectors, including such well-known artists as Alejandro Sanz, Pablo Alborán, Luz Casal or Manuel Carrasco as members.

The new academy arises from the ashes of the old Academy of Music Arts and Sciences created by the Sgae and AIE in 2001responsible for the celebration of the Music Awards for a decade until it became “inactive” in 2011 for “judicial and social reasons,” according to the documentation given to attendees.

“During the pandemic we realized that we were missing our voice,” said Charlie Sánchez on behalf of the producers, along with other prominent attendees at the event such as the promoter Pino Sagliocco, president of Live Nation Spain, or the singer Pasión Vega: “We have finally decided that we are a team, that the more we are, the more united and the more diverse, the better.“.

Was in 2021 when the rebirth of the association was announced under a new stage in which AIE and Sgae, who continue to provide their support and financing for its creation and maintenance together with AGEDI, “have given up on patrimonializing it so that it becomes a more open and participatory entity.”

Some great awards with national impact

“For the first time there is an academy that is not of entities, associations or companies, but of each and every one of the members belonging to the music sector,” Cobos stressed in this sense, with a special call “to the young people, so that they feel like owners of this house and take over as soon as possible“.

Under the big goal to “bring together all music professionals, and stimulate and proclaim excellence, solidarity, talent, work and effort, as intrinsic values of the musical community”, one of its great annual milestones will be the delivery of “some great awards with national impact to the great creative wealth that this country treasures”.

Another of the outstanding objectives outlined at the meeting held in Madrid is the creation of “the first music museum in this countrya very serious lack that must be corrected, with a hall of fame where every year we will incorporate a series of honorary academics to bring their careers closer to the general public.

Regulate AI “so that it is not used to exploit creation without the permission of its owners”, be “a clear and resounding voice to ensure that culture is valued and respected” and turn Spain into a “meeting point” between America and Europe are other goals that Acamus will pursue, which will also create a solidarity fund for professionals “in situations of extreme municipal need” in 2004.
