Aboutaleb threatens empty stadium if Feyenoord fans continue to violate rules | NOW

Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam warned Feyenoord in a letter on Monday about the behavior of some of the supporters. If the fans continue to violate the corona rules, home games may follow in an empty stadium.

It went wrong on Sunday during Feyenoord-FC Twente when some of the 13,000 supporters in De Kuip did not keep a distance of 1.5 meters and sang and cheered against the rules.

In his letter Aboutaleb demands that the security team in the stadium be expanded by 25 men. If the rules are broken again in the coming weeks, fewer fans or even no fans at all may be welcome. Mayors have the power to reduce the number of spectators.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte already spoke harsh words about supporters who do not comply with the rules. He told them to “just shut up,” though he came later back on that word choice.

Feyenoord has already announced that it is disappointed with the incident on Sunday and announced indicates that extra stewards will be deployed in the coming home games in the Eredivisie.

Incidentally, Feyenoord was not the only club in the Eredivisie where supporters did not adhere to the corona rules. “You saw that things were going better at one club than at another”, a KNVB spokesperson told NU.nl.
