It was the first meeting of the old and new mayors in the Würzburg district: on Tuesday afternoon, the local district association of the Bavarian Community Day met in Estenfeld’s White Mill for its constituent meeting. In the course of this, the representatives elected a new chairperson: The Mayor of Hettstadt Andrea Rothenbucher (non-party) succeeds Thomas Eberth (CSU), who resigned from office as the district administrator.
In his closing speech, Eberth mentioned numerous topics that the district association had dealt with in the past six years. Eberth described the refugee pact as “a great moment”, which would have received attention across Bavaria. “The distribution was not necessarily perfectly resolved, but we managed to balance the communities well,” said the outgoing chairman.
“In the end someone has to pay for it”

The Corona crisis has put many of these topics in the background. Now Eberth was already speaking as the new district administrator, in whose office he was sworn in the same place the day before. “The financial impact of the corona pandemic will be felt quickly,” emphasized Eberth, offering: “If things get critical, we have to talk to each other quickly.” The district is ready to help out with liquidity.
Guest speaker Andreas Gaß, who is responsible for local law and local commercial law at the Bavarian Community Day in Munich, later referred to Corona as a “mood killer”, but nevertheless responded as requested. “The rising level of public debt is causing us to worry about it. In the end, someone has to pay for it,” explained Gass, who assumes that this year there will be no municipal financial equalization in the order of ten billion euros again. A municipal rescue package is all the more important.
The smallest member is the village of Chiemsee with 211 inhabitants
Before that, the native of Bad Neustadt had brought the mayors closer to the advantages of his house as an information platform, training workshop and mouthpiece. “We need our district associations to bring our concerns into the state parliament, but also towards the federal government and the EU. Then we also have a good standing,” said Gass. Almost all of the more than 2,000 Bavarian municipalities are members of the community day. The smallest member is the town of Chiemsee with 211 inhabitants, the largest Neu-Ulm with 58,707. “That is what makes us effective, even if compromises are sometimes difficult.”
After the unanimous discharge of the district board, it was time for the new election
After the unanimous discharge of the district board, it was time for the new election. The only proposal for the first chair was Andrea Rothenbucher. The Mayor of Hettstadt was elected with an overwhelming majority – just like her new deputy, the Mayor of Reichenberg, Stefan Hemmerich (SPD), and the other board members. The following mayors were appointed to the regional planning association – the amalgamation with the city of Würzburg and the districts of Kitzingen and Main-Spessart: Alexander Knahn (representative: Tobias Klembt), Konrad Schlier (representative: Bernhard Weidner), Hermann Gabel (representative: Edwin Fries ) and Birgit Börger (representative: Martina Rottmann).
Finally, the mayors said goodbye to their former district administrator Eberhard Nuß – with timpani and trumpets. Eberth had two barrels of beer and a brass band brought into the multi-purpose hall. Nut was allowed to pierce the barrel and distribute the barley juice to the mayors.
