Thessaly in central Greece and the Sporades Islands off Evia were the regions most affected by Friday’s heavy rain and thunderstorms, the Athens Meteo National Observatory weather service said on Saturday.
Limited flooding was recorded in the prefectures of Karditsa and Magnisia, including the eastern and southern parts of the towns of Mount Pilio, areas hardest hit by Storm Daniel last year. Glossa on the island of Skopelos recorded the highest rainfall with 119 mm, followed by Karditsa in Thessaly with 117 mm.
According to the weather services, the rain will gradually be limited to the northeast of the mainland and the eastern parts of the Aegean Sea before it subsides.
Officials from the Fire and Civil Defense Group said that they had not recorded any particular problems, and that they had not received calls for flooded homes or for the rescue of trapped people, but that they had to cut down trees in some areas.
On Saturday, the National Weather Service had forecast heavy rain, reaching dangerous levels, in the following regions: Thessaly (especially the eastern part), Sporades Islands, southern Pieria ( Macedonia), the northern island of Evia, the prefecture of Fthiothida in Central Greece (especially the north), and the East Aegean islands (mainly Chios and Lesvos).
