In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Bob Menendez, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke out against US concessions to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan if he did not significantly change his position in the region, BTA reported.
Menendez noted that Erdogan’s provocations include the destabilization of the Eastern Mediterranean, the issue of Russian S-400 missiles, support for the authoritarian regime in Azerbaijan, and the anti-democratic treatment of the Turkish people.
Menendez described bilateral relations between the United States and Greece as stronger than ever, and defense cooperation was a key pillar. The senator has repeatedly sided with Greece’s rights in tensions with Turkey. Menendez also played a leading role in the recognition of the Armenian genocide by the US Senate.
In the interview, Bob Menendez expressed the expectation that President Joe Biden would remain resolute on Erdogan. The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee also said that 3 + 1 cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the United States could bring significant benefits to the region.
