A team of experts has made recommendations for improving NATO’s operations in the world

One year after French President Emanuel Macron said that NATO was experiencing a “brain death”, a team of experts had made concrete recommendations for improving NATO’s performance.

The team of experts was formed at the initiative of Germany, following Macron’s remarks, which provoked a heated debate among the Allies.

The report, which was presented to 30 NATO members on Wednesday, includes concrete suggestions for improving NATO’s operations, including closer cooperation through more frequent meetings of member states’ foreign ministers or other types of meetings, such as member states’ interior ministers’ meetings to discuss terrorism, the DPA reports.

Experts have also recommended speeding up NATO’s political response to security threats or international crises. At present, Member States may need several days to make a joint statement.

The report contains 140 specific recommendations, according to the information available to the DPA. The report will be discussed at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on Tuesday.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will then present an action plan with member countries. The goal is to complete it by the time of NATO’s next summit, which is expected in the second quarter of 2021.

The NATO office declined to comment on the report, but confirmed that it had been received.

The report is expected to be published next week after the meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

In an interview with Ekonomist last year, Macron said NATO was experiencing a “brain death” by doing nothing about Turkey’s unilateral military intervention in Syria.
