Health officials in Nova Scotia in eastern Canada have declared an outbreak of syphilis. They encourage the population to be tested regularly in order to curb the spread of this sexually transmitted disease.

From 50 cases of syphilis in 2018 to 82 cases in 2019, the numbers in Nova Scotia represent an increase of 60%. Unlike in previous years when the epidemic was mainly concentrated in the Halifax area, the disease now affects the entire province.

Bacterial disease is a sexually transmitted infection and can be contracted through unprotected anal, oral, or vaginal sex. In 2019, 20% of cases were female compared to 10% the previous year.

Syphilis can be treated with antibiotics, but without treatment, it can have serious repercussions on the brain, heart and other organs that can lead to death.

According to Ottawa Public Health, there have been 76% more cases in the past 12 months, from July 2013 to June 2014.
