A solar eclipse is coming… and Valença will be the best place to see

It is considered the “most important astronomical event of the year in Portugal” and, curiously, it will take place precisely on the Day of Portugal: June 10th. It is an eclipse of the Sun.

“This is an annular eclipse, as the Moon’s elliptical orbit puts it slightly further away from Earth than average when Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned. Therefore, it cannot completely cover the solar disk and cause a total eclipse, leaving a Sun ring visible around the Moon. And this would be what they could see… if they were close to the North Pole!” he explained to Postal Ricardo Cardoso Reis, graduated in Astronomy from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.

However, in Portugal, the phenomenon will not have the spectacularity of other eclipses. “It will only be observed as a partial, with the portion of our star being covered by the Moon being so much larger, the further to the North and to the coast”.

Thus, guarantees the specialist, “the worst observation site in Portugal will be in Vila Real de Santo António, with only 3.5% of the sun covered, while the best in mainland Portugal will be Valença, with 11.1% of our star in the dark”.

Peak point of the eclipse will be reached at 11:36 am with 11.1% of the sun hidden by the moon

The phenomenon is scheduled to start at 9:48 am. The maximum point of the eclipse should occur at 10:39 am with such 11.1% of the sun hidden by the Moon. From then onwards it will always be descending, with the end of the eclipse scheduled for 11:36 am.

After this, the next eclipse of the Sun visible in the district of Viana do Castelo will only occur in 2024, more precisely on April 8th. However, the perception of the phenomenon will be almost nil considering that the moon will cover a very small percentage of the sun.
