For the past few weeks, it has had a room for secular ceremonies. It was inaugurated on Thursday June 2, 2022 by the mayor of Anglet, Claude Olive, who recalled, on this occasion, the reason for this equipment.

“The fundamental axis of our policy remains attention to Anglois, service adapted to all ages of life, from birth to old age, in all possible dimensions and directions. This policy requires particular attention to societal changes, new behaviors […].»

With regard to funeral ceremonies, it has been observed that more and more families are asking to pay homage to their deceased on the sidelines of places of worship and religious ceremonies.

The secular ceremony hall, which has been used twice since its opening, has forty seats and thirty outdoor seats, under a soundproof canopy. The room is also equipped with a screen on which images and films can be shown and means for playing music. It also has a vault for temporary use and a technical room.

It was built in place of the old depository, the walls of which have been preserved. The construction of this secular ceremony hall represents an investment of approximately 130,000 euros. It is signed by the Salta architectural firm in Biarritz.

“By offering this material possibility to families who do not want a religious funeral, we put all Anglois on an equal footing in the face of permanent separation. concluded Claude Olive.

Extension over 30 years

The Blancpignon cemetery is also the subject of a major extension project, to be carried out in three phases over thirty years. Its purpose is to enable Anglet to meet the very strict legal requirements in the field of burial. Anglet must in particular have a “common ground”, an open space, designated in the past by mass grave or square of the destitute and intended for free burials.

Its area must correspond to five times the number of annual deaths in the city multiplied by the minimum area of each tomb, which is 2.5 m². For Anglet, this corresponds to an area of 3,325 m². It currently owns only a third of this area.

In addition, the demographic growth forecast which foresees 43,000 inhabitants in Anglet by 2030, with a significant proportion of elderly people, requires the necessary spaces to be available for future concessions.
