A rest area was created in Prague’s Malvazinky. But no one wants to sit in it

The Institute of Planning and Development, together with the management of the Prague 5 district, occupied a busy intersection with chairs and tables, where six streets intersect. They are installed on site from the beginning of August and will remain there until the end of September. According to the Deputy Mayor of Prague 5, Lubomír Brož, this is a test project that will help the city district decide how to use the place in the future.

Soon after the placement, however, the city authorities were criticized for placing the seats in the middle of the road, without the greenery and shade. “Try to sit there in the heat, asphalt, without shade. Whoever invented this has never been physically in those places, ”comments Daniela Vágnerová on Facebook.

On warm days, hot tables and chairs are unused

The majority of local residents also gave a similar opinion to the News in the survey. “It would take some parasols. As there is no greenery, there is a lot of heat, “said the man who lives in the place. “There is no shadow. I live a short time, but I haven’t seen many people here yet, I’ve only seen one person sitting, “added another.

The News staff moved in space during Tuesday afternoon, when temperatures reached thirty degrees. In an hour and a half of filming, the space remained virtually unused. “If you want to sit here on the hot concrete, it doesn’t make much sense in the sun,” a passing woman said.

Another problem is seen by locals in the lack of parking spaces directly in front of the supermarket. “We used to have the opportunity to park right in front of the supermarket, because the husband is a disabled pensioner, and now we have to keep wearing it,” described a woman who has lived in Malvazinky for over 30 years.

Locals also complain about poorer parking

However, some passers-by praised the idea. “It’s absolutely great because it will be used. The island was not nice here at all, “it said.

According to Deputy Mayor Brože, they plan to solve the problem of parking and shade. “It is clear how important parking is in this place, and around the entire perimeter of the island, the same number of parking spaces as it is today will only be arranged more clearly,” he said on Facebook.

A work of art from a Prague gallery made of scaffolding should be temporarily installed on the site, which will help delimit the plot and create at least a partial shadow there.

Sitting on the Smetana embankment has been operating since May

The Prague City Hall created a similar space in May on Smetana’s embankment. He also provoked contradictory reactions. At that time, the municipality closed the embankment between the intersection with Národní třída and Divadelní Street for cars from the direction from Karlovy Lázně to the National Theater.

Restaurant gardens were created on the site, through which the city wanted to support entrepreneurs affected by measures against coronavirus. However, even the local sitting in the center of Prague has long remained rather unused.
