As of yesterday, there were no longer any cases of COVID-19 between the walls of the Accueil Notre-Dame residence, located in a disadvantaged district of Magog, in the Eastern Townships.

“We are proud of ourselves,” says general manager Carl Grandchamps.

Among the three residents and two employees infected, there was Jeannette Roy, 97 years old.

Despite a positive test, she showed no symptoms and recovered easily.

“I didn’t mind being alone for three weeks,” said Roy.

Even though she has been able to leave her quarters since last week, she will wait for the heat to take a stroll on the property’s grounds.

“I don’t want to get the flu. ”

After nine weeks of strict confinement, the management authorizes independent seniors to leave their room.

Even if they have no more cases, they remain cautious.

“Cross contamination must be avoided. We must remain vigilant. If there’s a little sagging, it’s a slaughter, “said Grandchamps.

Residents can go out on the grounds of the establishment or go to do their “essential” shopping, provided they respect the sanitary measures dictated by Accueil Notre-Dame.

No giant tiger …

Masks and gloves are mandatory to go out and it is forbidden to go to big box stores, otherwise, the tenants will have to go through a 14-day isolation, like this resident who did her shopping at the Giant Tiger on Tuesday.

“We continue to put out small fires of delinquency. We need security guards everywhere to watch over the residents, ”he adds.

From the start of confinement, the establishment applied very strict measures, “a check mark” of those required by public health, according to Mr. Grandchamps.

Smoking in his room

The patients were isolated and the dining room was closed. Employees only had access to a limited number of areas. A lot of jackets, masks and gloves were distributed to staff at the end of March, in addition to the mandatory masks for all residents.

“I went to get protective equipment directly from the Sherbrooke biomedical center,” said Grandchamps. And we got a big mask sponsorship. ”

A resident was even able to smoke inside her room to avoid going outside.

A first employee received a positive test at COVID on March 30 after feeling unwell. The 19 people who came into contact with her were quickly placed in isolation.

On April 13, all employees and residents of the Reception were screened.

“We have made it clear to public health that it is unthinkable that there is no screening,” said Grandchamps. We have so much contact with our patients given their reduced mobility. ”

The category 4 private seniors’ residence (RPA) serves low-income clients with mobility problems. To be included in this category, you must offer a nursing service and a personal assistance service.

“We are a big social housing company with care,” sums up Mr. Grandchamps.

He also believes that it is thanks to “category 4” that the Hospitality has distinguished itself. For patient services, they hire staff “with at least five years of experience,” he said.

Effective procedures

  • Containment in rooms 24/24
  • Closing of the dining room
  • Adequate and sufficient protective equipment for personnel
  • Establishment of work areas for employees
  • Screening for all employees and residents
  • Preventive isolation
