A price increase would be the wrong signal – Berlin.de

From the perspective of passenger representatives, customers cannot be brought back with higher fares for buses and trains. “That would be the wrong signal,” said the vice chairman of the Berlin passenger association Igeb, Jens Wieseke, of the German press agency. The association Pro Bahn expressed itself similarly. Wieseke called for better solutions for people who now work at home from time to time and no longer drive to work every day.

The Berlin-Brandenburg transport association will probably decide next week whether to adjust the tariffs. In other German regions, the associations have already decided, in some cases significant increases. In Munich and the surrounding area, for example, they are increasing by an average of 3.7 percent. The reason for this is the loss of income in the corona pandemic.

“Many passengers are financially in a difficult situation because they were on short-time work or were even given notice,” said Peter Cornelius, the Berlin-Brandenburg chairman of the Pro Bahn association. If as many people are to travel by bus and train again as before Corona, this can most likely be achieved with stable prices.

Buses and trains would have to be financed more from the public budget than from ticket prices, demanded Wieseke of the interest group for rail, local transport and passenger issues Berlin (Igeb). Berlin is showing the way, Brandenburg also has to recognize that.

In the past, Brandenburg member companies in particular had put pressure on the joint transport association for price increases. Most recently, at the beginning of 2021, the tariffs had risen by an average of 1.9 percent, and occasional drivers were particularly affected.

In the Corona crisis, some commuters canceled their local transport subscriptions. Those who kept the contract can now look forward to thank-you campaigns: in September they were allowed to drive almost nationwide for two weeks at no extra charge, and during the autumn holidays they can take an adult and three children with them in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Transport companies are also trying to get customers to return. The VBB will be testing flexible offers for people who sometimes work in the home office in Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) next year.

In Berlin, passengers can buy a package of eight personalized tickets for 44 euros. This allows them to drive 24 hours in the city area (tariff area AB) within a month. “This is not the big hit yet,” commented Wieseke. The offer is not cheap and a bit complicated. Alternatively, there is also the tried and tested 4-trip ticket for 9.40 euros.
