Symptoms that should never be underestimated
If you have a boil inside your nostril, there is generally nothing to worry about. In most cases, it is completely harmless. At worst, however, a pimple here on the body could be lethal. In fact, if accompanied by other symptoms, it would represent a wake-up call: you could suffer from nasal vestibulitis.
Nasal vestibulitis is a bacterial infection of the nasal vestibule, which is the inside of the nostrils. You can recognize it by these symptoms:
a) red, swollen and dry nose;
c) formation of pimple-like swellings inside the nostrils;
d) folliculitis, or formation of small boils near the hair follicles;
e) scabs in the nose and nosebleeds (if the scabs break).
These are problems that we tend to underestimate. Yet, they can lead to tragic implications. So, how to avoid vestibulitis?
How to cure it and why it can be lethal
Prevention is better than cure. In order not to suffer from nasal vestibulitis, it is therefore necessary to avoid the habits that cause it. First, don’t pick your nose. Particular attention should be paid to children, who often have this habit. Secondly, don’t blow your nose continuously and excessively. Finally, plucking nose hairs can cause vestibulitis. This infection could also be favored by a nose piercing, chronic rhinorrhea or other pathologies of the nose.
Generally, vestibulitis is easily treated: an antibiotic cream is enough, or an oral antibiotic in the most serious cases. If you recognize the symptoms of this infection, however, see your doctor as soon as possible. The nose is in fact a delicate area: veins pass through it that lead directly to the brain. It is therefore rare, but certainly not impossible, that the infection moves from the skin to the bloodstream. This complication leads to cavernous sinus thrombosis. The consequences could be coma, or even death. Think about it next time you pick your nose!
