Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Representatives from Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a German submarine manufacturer, arrived in Jakarta this week. Their aim is to offer a proposal for the procurement of the Type 214 Diesel-Electric submarine (SSK) to the Indonesian Navy.
This plan was continued through a meeting of the TKMS delegates with the Team of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir.
So, what is the sophistication of this type of submarine so that Indonesia in its defense work plan is eyeing the German-made submarine?
Diesel-Electric submarine (SSK) Type 214 is one of the most advanced submarines made by German TKMS which is also a hybrid type.
According to the company’s website (TKMS) as quoted on Sunday (7/3/2021), the SSK Type 214 is a submarine with a single hull compartment that combines the design principles of the previous type, namely type 209 and type 212A.
Combining these design principles, the SSK Type 214 provides a very reliable operational cost saving solution and is the best option for use for the global Navy.
With a length of 72 meters and a pressure hull diameter of 6.3 meters, this type of submarine can accommodate a crew of 27 and has 8 gun tubes. The SSK Type 214 is also capable of diving in ocean depths of up to 400 meters (1,300 feet) and can hold food, clean water and fuel for 84 days of operation.
This large payload allows the submarine’s cruising coverage to be wider and flexible to operate from coastal waters to patrolling the high seas.
The Type 214 submarine is equipped with the latest Fuel Cell Air-Independent Propulsion System technology, which has also been shown to increase endurance while at sea and reduce the risk of detection with the support of upgraded sonar capabilities.
Regarding defense, the Type 214 SSK is also capable of carrying large weapons including torpedoes, missiles and mines with the ability to accelerate at maximum speed without causing noise from gear transmission shifting.
The sophistication of the Type 214 SSK has attracted the attention of various countries, from South Korea which has ordered and operated 9 submarines of this type. Followed by Turkey, Greece and Israel.
