A new rise in the cost of living in Tangier

The indicative figure for consumption prices for households in Tangier increased by 1 percent in January, while consumption prices rose by 9.2 percent on an annual basis.

The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Planning Directorate reported that, on a monthly level, the indicative number of foodstuffs increased by 2.5 percent in January 2023 compared to December 2022, mainly due to the increase in the prices of “fruits” and “mineral water, refreshing drinks, and fruit juice.” And vegetables” by 5.9 percent, “vegetables” by 3.3 percent, “fish and seafood” by 2.9 percent, “meat” by 2.7 percent, unclassified foodstuffs by 2.4 percent, and “milk, Cheese and eggs” by 2.1 percent, “oils and fats” by 1.2 percent, and “bread and grains” by 1.1 percent.

The indices of “restaurants and hotels” increased by 1 percent, “health” by 0.5 percent, “furniture, household appliances and regular home maintenance” by 0.2 percent, and “housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels” by 0.1 percent.

On an annual level, the indicative number of foodstuffs increased by 18.4 percent in January 2023 compared to January 2022, due to the increase in the prices of “oils and fats” by 33.7 percent, “fruits” by 28.9 percent, and “vegetables” by 26.7. “Meat” by 18.5 percent, “milk, cheese and eggs” by 18 percent, “fish and seafood” by 12.6 percent, “mineral water, refreshing drinks, fruit and vegetable juices” by 12 percent, and “mineral water” by 12 percent. The annual change of the non-food items index increased by 3.8 percent, due to the increase in all indices of the sections that constitute non-food items. The “Transportation” section recorded the highest increase, with 12 percent.
