Helmut Schmitt, NT-Oberensingen. To the article “Southwest contributes more than one billion to flood relief” from August 13th.

Because of the already tight budget situation and to deal with the pandemic, the state of Baden-Württemberg is taking out a loan of “up to 15 billion euros”. With this, the state also wants to participate in the joint reconstruction fund for the flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, because the money is urgently needed there. Good this way! In times of need, Baden-Württemberg naturally shows solidarity with the affected countries, says the Baden-Württemberg finance minister. Good this way!

But does the finance minister show solidarity with the schools in the country that urgently need money to buy equipment? The headlines on this topic are much smaller and also much less positive. The main discussion is a lack of money, although the sums involved are much smaller. The bureaucracy that slows you down is only spoken of when you want to explain that it is absolutely necessary. I wonder why? You can’t shine with that and it doesn’t bring votes either, because the majority of the students are not allowed to vote anyway. Not good like that! But if you consider in this context that the city of Stuttgart, together with the state of Baden-Württemberg, wants to spend a billion euros on the renovation of the State Opera, then you no longer understand the world. One billion euros, that’s one thousand million euros! Not good like that! Who do you want to show solidarity with? Who do you want to spend so much money on? Yes, you need culture too, but maybe half the amount would do it too. But that’s not up for discussion, no, you even want to go one better. Probably in eternal memory of the catastrophic suffering that the most recent flood disaster brought on people. or more to the “horror and damage” that the storm inflicted on the opera roof, one now seriously wants to create an “artist sculpture” out of the copper sheet ball of the opera roof, which is to be erected in front of the opera. For the people who decide something like this, money doesn’t seem to matter. It’s just taxpayers’ money. Not at all good!

Conclusion: Not everything that is well-intentioned in the beginning is also good in execution if it is not thought through to the end and does not fit into the time. But if this is rigorously enforced, it won’t work at all.
